FAQ

1.What is Grass-Fed?
You are what you eat, the same goes to our cows that produce the milk. New Zealand is one of the few places in the world where cows can roam freely and graze on the natural food source, grass over 350 days in a year. 96% of their diet consist of grass, grass silage, hay and forage crops (legumes and brassicas); while 4% comes from supplementary feeds inclusive of corn silage, dairy concentrates and palm kernel expeller.
2.There are so many cows out there feeding with grass too, aren’t them the same?
It may look the same, however the differences come from the New Zealand grassland is closely monitored by our well trained and experienced farmers that lead the world in many aspects of sustainable dairying, with high productivity, year-round pasture grazing and lower use of supplementary feed. The farmers in our farming system are supported by a specialist from the expert team of Sustainable Dairying Advisors to establish the Farm Environmental Plans. These plans include a detailed map and are unique to each farm. It utilizes the GID mapping and modelling to efficiently optimize our farming systems.

Our farmers take special care on the water quality, soil health and biodiversity including the exclusion of stocks from waterways, riparian management, nutrient management and low-till to no-till land management. They have fenced more than 90% of permanent waterways and more than 12,500km of additional small, intermittent waterways on their farm across New Zealand.

On top of that, our farmers are always looking to adopt new technology such as the soil probes to measure and track farm performance, improve soil health, maximize grass-growth and productivity, and improve the sustainability on their farm. This paired with the nature of New Zealand; fertile soil, suitable climate, excellent rainfall and the abundance of sunshine is the ideal environment for the grass to flourish. This in turn helps to produce quality dairy for our healthy daily consumption.
3.Don’t all cows eat grass?
The cows feed on grass by nature, however due to the limitation of the geographical circumstances and farming system, some are fed mostly with ensiled forages and grains.
4.How many farms worldwide are producing milk from cows with the grass-fed system (also known as grazing system)?
Globally, it is estimated that only 10 to 15% of milk production is based on grazing systems.
5.Are your cows also raised naturally like the grass?
Yes! Definitely. Our grass-fed system naturally provides a high level of animal welfare which allows our dairy cows to socially interact with each other. The natural environment and our farming system allow our cows to graze on the grassland for more than 350 days a year on average. On top of that, The New Zealand Government also prohibits the use of animal growth hormones (rBST) in dairy farming.
6.How do you know that New Zealand’s cows spend more time on pasture than anywhere else in the world?

It all started with a mixture of the warm sun, healthy soil and quality water to bless us with lush green New Zealand grass. Thanks to New Zealand’s temperate climate, our cows are able to graze freely on this grass most of the time for the whole year. The grass contains essential nutrition for the cows, helping them to produce high quality milk. It is rich with a particular nutrient called beta-carotene which gives New Zealand butter that natural golden colour. Our butter is made from ALL-NATURAL ingredients; fresh cream separated from cow’s milk (milk fat, milk proteins, minerals, lactose) and sometimes salt. It takes approximately 25 litres of milk to make 1 kilogram of butter.
